Bead Knitting
Bead knitting is a really wonderful way to create something unique. It's so easy to follow a knitting pattern and churn out what it says to the letter but how exciting to add a jewel here and there? Bead knitting means what it says, you actually knit with beads incorporated in your design by threading on little bits here and there or having a whole row if you're feeling daring! It adds a challenge to your work and it makes your finished garment truly wonderful.
The beads used are usually ceramic or glass and have larger holes than the beads you would use for jewellery making. They need to be able to fit onto the yarn you are using so bare this in mind when you're buying won't you. Also have a good rub at the beads with your fingers - they need to be hard wearing but they also don't want to fade in colour in the wash. The longer wear of the beads , will lengthen the life of your garment no end. Ask your supplier for the right sort and they'll be sure to point you in the right direction.
There are techniques for both bead knitting and for knitting sequins and other types of embellishment that won't fit on your yarn. The best and easiest way is to thread your beads on at the beginning and then you can pull them forward when you want to add one to the place that you intend, but you can also slip a stitch, put beads on in between. It's really what works well for you.
The other way is to knit the garment in the traditional way and then go back and sew the beads or sequins on afterwards. This is a good way to add bead wear to a garment if you feel unsure. It's easier to see where they will go and you have more control, can take them off again if you get fed up with the look and re dress with a different kind again - lengthen the life of your knitwear - why knot!!
