Crochet Hooks

A crochet hook is a tool used to crochet -believe it or not! Only one is usually needed in the craft of crochet, and they can be made from lots of different materials. Aluminium or plastic is the most common, but some can be made from bone, bamboo, steel and wood. They are commercially manufactured as well as produced by artisans. They are inexpensive and it's a good idea to get lots of different sizes if you are genuinely interested in crocheting as a hobby.
Crochet hooks are made in aluminium, plastic or bone and are suitable for working with wools, heavy cottons and synthetic yarns. Steel crochet hooks are great for working with fine cottons. A crocheter aims to create stitches of a certain size to reach the particular gauge that is given in the pattern. A crochet hook can come in many sizes , which is categorised by the diameter of the shaft of the hook.
There are steel crochet hooks ranging in size from 0.4 to 3.5 mm or from 00 to 16 in American sizing. These hooks are used for fine crochet work such as doilies and lace. Aluminium, plastic and bamboo crochet quarks are available from 2.5 to 19 mm, or from B to S in American sizing. Artisan made hooks are often made of hand turned woods and can be decorated with semiprecious stones or beads. Tunisian crochet hooks are elongated and have a stop at the end of the handle. Double ended crochet hooks have a hook on both ends.
As you get more experienced at crochet you will have a preference for one type of hook material over another. There are things such as hook grips or ergonomic hook handles which are available to assist crafters if you have a hand disorder such as arthritis.
