Description
Skiff Vintage Knitting Patterns was started up at the beginning of 2009 by me, Geraldine Warner, a self-confessed craftaholic. This offspring was born out of a passion for the fashions of the 1940s and 1950s, twinned with my die-hard love of knitting. Some of my earliest memories are of my Mum’s huge collection of vintage knitting patterns (many sadly lost over time) and she used to knit the most wonderful Vogue dresses, skirts and suits using 2ply wool and size 13 needles, introducing me to a love affair which has never faded. Sadly her taste didn’t extend to me and I remember one particularly nasty pink crimplene dress I was forced to wear to my first school disco.
I remember poring over the pages of Mum’s vintage Vogue Knitting books, amazed at the elegance of the models and the clothes, utterly bemused by the instructions accompanying the images. I vowed I’d deconstruct that code and live the kind of romantic lifestyle they seemed to be living … well sadly not all dreams come true.
So I’ve been a front end web designer (including a stint at Sadler’s Wells), before that I worked in television, before that worked with musos, did a bit of Press including hosting a bunch of international journos for Kiss at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington. I was the unfortunate PR who promised a bus load of fanatical German journalists a backstage interview exclusive whilst Kiss’ helicopter disappeared into the sky behind me. This still gives me nightmares and I hold myself responsible – I shuddered and took a step back when Gene Simmons did his waggly tongue thing at me while I was standing offstage and I think he was offended.
I digress … during all those amusing diversions I continued to knit, the knitting code became clearer and my taste in knitted clothes didn’t change (the same can’t be said of pink crimplene dresses).
This collection of vintage knitting patterns is ongoing (I’m constantly adding to it) and has been collated over the years - hopefully you’ll find something here for you. I’ve also put together some hints and tips to help you through the tricky bits - adapting vintage patterns isn’t always easy, so it’s useful to know what you’re getting into!
Vintage knitting patterns is my big love but I also flirt with other crafts, hence the craft blog, love letters to my bits on the side..
