About Us

Wingham Wool Work began trading in the late 1970's we started off as a small business producing handspun yarns and knitwear. Interest developed from customers who wanted to learn to spun and purchase fibres and equipment. From this initial stage we started to stock a small range of fibres and wheels. This lead to us taking our first business premises in the village of Wentworth and opening our retail outlet and mail order service. Over the next 10 years this expanded as sales increased. During this time we bought in all our blends and carded mixes. Opportunity then arose to move to our present premises, still in the village of Wentworth. At the same time we were able to install our own machinery for processing many of the fibres we now sell. This developement allowed us full control of our products. We were able to produce what was needed by handspinners and feltmakers instead having having to use what is available on the commercial market for mass production. Development of our special blends has continued, often in response to customer requests, we will try anything. Interestingly were we have led others have followed and we now have versions of our blends and fibre range appearing for sale. Our advantage is that when we have a new blend we can trial it by spinning and felting with it and then offer direct advice to customers. Because we have a craft background rather than a wool merchants we are sympathetic to the needs of the textile worker, we like to communicate and talk about products rather than simply exploiting a retail opportunity.

Over the years we have continued to grow from a workforce of one to a team of seven plus part time helpers when needed. As computer based communication and sales have developed we have moved with the times to our present state of having a fairly good web site. It has always been our intention not to loose the personal contact with our customers and to maintain this we have our retail shop sales and our regular visits to guilds and groups around the UK and Ireland. We started the business as handspinners and later feltmaking came along, we like to maintain the fact that we are actual workers with fibres and have maintained and developed our skills.
