Working With Crochet

Working with crochet hasn't got any hard and fast rules about how you should hold your work. Most crochet workers find their own method, which is comfortable and practical to them. If you are used to knitting, then working with one needle can seem daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it crocheting is really great fun and very fast at producing pieces of work.
Getting started can also seem daunting but working with crochet means basically using a variation of just one stitch. Let's start at the beginning. One recommended method is to loop the yarn around your little finger on your left hand and then take it across the palm and behind the forefinger. The yarn is then held over the forefinger while you work and the work itself is being grasped between your thumb and forefinger to steady it.
Holding the hook means putting it in the hand that you use to write with, between your thumb and forefinger as you would hold a pen or pencil. Place your middle finger on top of the hook to guide it. The first loop on the hook should be fairly near the tip of the crochet hook so work can be controlled more easily.
When making your first loop, we would advise you to use the medium hook and a fairly thick yarn in a bright colour so that the stitches are easy to see and control. Undo a few centimetres of yarn from the ball and make a loop clockwise around the first two fingers of your left hand. Take the crochet hook in your right hand and push through the loop and pull the yarn back through to make a loop on the hook itself. Pull gently on the shorter end of the yarn and this will taughten the yarn and make your first loop. Now you've done your very first loop off you go- you'll love working with crochet, we guarantee.
